Hiring Help? Be Smart

Full disclosure: I’m still learning more about writing and publishing and I’ve been doing this for a good long time.

My new book “The Seer” is coming out September 14, a mystery about a fake psychic who is hired by the military at the start of WWII.

I’m determined to do everything humanly possible to promote the novel.

Yes, my publisher is great with publicity. Yes, this is not my first novel or my first rodeo. But this time I’m going to step up and hire pros to guide my publicity and do more with the book than my publisher and I can.

I’m committed to selling as many copies as possible. I want it to be a bestseller.

What is new to me and maybe you in the process. Hence, I’m interviewing and hiring the right professionals to enhance my success and meet my goals. I think I’m okay at marketing books and my first novel “Games of the Heart” was #3 on Amazon’s best new fiction list, for about 15 minutes or maybe a bit more.

Yet just like when you are going to hire a contractor to add a deck on the house or reno the kitchen, the end result will be better than if you learn everything you thought you needed from YouTube.

First off, learn what you need done before you talk with the pros. Ask colleagues for recommendations, find out what they did or didn’t do and then do your own vetting.

Basically, that’s the key. Learn what each consultant does and make sure the tasks do not overlap or if they do, this is a good thing. My book is going on “tour” with Suzy’s Approved Book Tour. Books Forward will take it out to the world. The publisher, Torch Flame, will coordinate with these efforts.

Sounds smooth as glass. However, it’ll be up to me to jump when I need to, supply sample copies of books, provide articles and head shots, be ready for interviews or quotes. And you know what? I can’t wait.

Before you hire any book-related professional, from a copy editor to publicity firm to literary agent, check their references, talk with their clients and dig deep on the Internet. Ask good consumer questions and read the fine print.

I’ll keep you posted in the coming months about how all this is going. Right now, I’m thrilled and can’t wait to share the cover of “The Seer.”

PS: I’m offering a free, live workshop in Carlsbad CA, July 10, 17, and 24. It’s three, one-hour sessions for “Write Your Book in 20 Minutes.” Yes, FREE. Interested? Shoot me an email evashaw@att.net . I’ll add your name to the list. There’s no catch. Just trying out some new material for future writing workshops and to promote “The Seer.”
